A good rule of thumb is that a chimney should be swept once per year. The appliance type and fuel being used will effect this though and many people sweep twice a year.
Will there be a mess when my chimney is swept?
In the bad old days before the industrial vacuum cleaner, sweeping a chimney often led to soot being showered all over the house. Thankfully with modern equipment and modern appliances the potential for mess is greatly reduced.
